In a progressive move normally unseen by fire departments, this position was created based on the trends of incidence of fire caused from a lack of knowledge and awareness by the general public. Jim Carroll, the FPE Officer focuses on establishing and implementing fire prevention education programs for specific groups such as, pre-school, elementary and middle school-aged children; members of service groups in the community; and senior citizens.
The Fire Prevention Education Office uses the Safe at Home curriculum, developed by the State of Michigan, to teach school aged children fire prevention messages. The same curriculum is used to address the senior citizens of Grand Traverse County. We visit several elementary schools consistently throughout the school year and participate in a number of summer school programs. Our appreciation to area retailers such as Walmart, Sam's Club, and Home Depot who sponsor health and safety fairs and invite our department to participate in their Safety Programs. Fire prevention education is available to any entity in Grand Traverse County. Church groups, before and after school programs, neighborhood parties, civic groups, governmental groups, employees and employers in the workplace, luncheons, retail and private health and safety events, daycare operations, and senior living and assisted living homes are examples of programs we will visit. Emphasis is placed
on regular education presentations and contact throughout the community.
